The Mexican food is an incredibly popular form of ethnic food best known for it’s bold flavors, home style goodness, and spicy kicks. With a wide variety of flavors, it’s no wonder many people in North American claim it as their favorite. Originating from South America, common ingredients include items like pork, beans, salsa, pico de gallo, and guacamole. But what are the most popular Mexican food items? Read on to find out.

1) Tacos

Whether authentic or “gringo” styled, tacos have become a mainstay in the North American diet. Tacos are diverse, even more so than the other food items on this list. The foundation of this Mexican food is a tortilla – flour, corn, or white corn. There are two basic forms of tacos: the authentic kind, and what is often referred to as a “Gringo” or “white” taco.

Authentic tacos are usually made on corn tortillas. They are then filled with meat (usually pork, chicken, or steak), and pico de gallo. This is topped off with a spritz of lime juice, cilantro, and served with a side of salsa or hot sauce.

“Gringo” tacos are basically Americanized versions of the food. They are typically served on flour tortillas, and filled with hamburger meat, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, salsa, and sour cream. Sometimes they also come with beans and rice. Recently, fish tacos have become a popular main stay for coastal areas.

2) Burritos

A burrito is similar to a taco, but instead of the fillings being folded inside of a small tortilla, they are rolled into a larger one. Most commonly burritos come filled with beans, rice, meat, and cheese. This Mexican food often comes with a side of salsa, hot sauce, and possibly sour cream. The most common type of meats used are steak, chicken, and ground hamburger.

3) Quesadillas

Like tacos and burritos, quesadillas use tortilla shells. For this food, there are either two tortilla shells layered atop one another, or else a very large tortilla shell folded in half. Quesadillas are primarily cheese-based, grilled so that the cheese melts.

The primary ingredient in this Mexican food is cheese, specifically either cheddar-jack, Mexican blend, or straight cheddar. Any type of cheese may be used, however, depending on the customer’s preference. They can also be filled with nearly anything. The most common ingredients include: chicken, steak, shrimp, onions, and peppers. Sometimes vegetables are added. Quesadillas are often served with a side of sour cream.
